Eating Seasonally in New York

By: Jaz Popa, 9/16/2022

Did you know that one of the easiest ways to stretch your food dollars is to eat seasonally?

Eating seasonally is a simple way to save money because food that’s in season is cheaper than food that’s out of season! This is often the case because when food is in season in your area, that means it can be grown in close proximity to the location where you get food. This decreases the distance your produce must travel to get to you and cuts down on transportation and storage costs. One way to know what produce is in season is to pay attention to the way your grocery store has its produce displayed. The fruits and veggies displayed in the front of the produce section, oftentimes in crates separate from the rest of the produce, are most likely in season. You’ll often notice that this produce is also on sale or at a lower cost than usual. This is an excellent indicator that the produce is in season and is the best time to buy. Another way to know what food is in season is to check a local availability guide. The key to this, however, is to make sure you are searching for what’s in season in the state you are purchasing from and the time of year you are purchasing it. If you find a food you’re interested in learning about, it will also tell you fun facts about that fruit, how to store it, and how to cook it!

Not only will shopping seasonally help you save money, but you will also be getting higher quality produce! Produce that you get out of season often comes from other states that can take days or even weeks to get to you. Because in season produce can be grown in your area, it doesnt have to be transported very far. In season produce can ripen on the vine rather than in a truck during its long journey to get to you. Ripening on the vine allows for produce to be tastier and more nutrient dense because fruits and veggies get their delicious flavor and rich nutrients while it is still connected to their plant. Once it is removed, produce can no longer gain nutrients and begin to deteriorate. So, save some money, stretch your food dollars, and enjoy tastier fruit by shopping seasonally! (https://njaes.rutgers.edu/FS1179/)
