United Way of Westchester and Putnam ensures that residents in Westchester and Putnam counties have access to quality education, financial stability, good health, and essential services for basic needs.   

As an AmeriCorps VISTA, you have the power to make a significant impact on the lives of others in our local community.   

VISTA members will build the capacity and expand programming in our food security initiatives, including the 211 Helpline Resource Database, the Ride United Last Mile Delivery Program, the Summer Backpack Programs, Double Up Bucks, and food insecurity studies. United Way coordinates these programs in cooperation with agencies such as Feeding Westchester, Volunteer New York!, Cornell Cooperative of Putnam County, American Heart Association, various food pantries, Westchester County Government, and Putnam County Government.   

These programs strive to increase food security for low-income residents, including the” working poor,” by empowering individuals with access to resources and knowledge.   

The employee culture at the United Way of Westchester and Putnam (UWWP) strives to be fun and focuses on service, kindness, and resourcefulness.  Being a VISTA member is an excellent opportunity for someone to join a small collaborative, supportive team, working intelligently and diligently. A successful VISTA candidate is flexible, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and emotionally intelligent.   

As a result of the VISTA members’ efforts, United Way will better understand the food security needs in Westchester and Putnam communities. It will also identify service gaps, best practices to enhance program impact, and how to leverage UWWP’s resources to improve the food security of individuals from BIPOC communities.    

With your help, we will transform the lives of the most vulnerable children and families in Westchester and Putnam counties. 

Responsibilities: In coordination with the Director of Community Impact, and in collaboration with United Way staff, specific VISTA responsibilities include: (1) Program Assessment - evaluating the effectiveness of the individual programs as well as the collective portfolio of programs.  (2) Service Mapping - identifying geographical service gaps.  (3) Research -identify potential funding sources for the organization to pursue.  (4) Volunteer Recruitment - ensure programs have access to volunteers to expand and sustain programming.  (5) Communications and Marketing – create content that can be used to promote the programs or to enhance their sustainability. (6) Outreach -help, plan, execute and support volunteer recruitment for two episodic volunteer events that create greater awareness in the community about the struggles of people living in or at risk of poverty.    

Benefits: AmeriCorps VISTA offers childcare assistance if eligible, choice of Education Award or End of Service Stipend upon successful completion of service, Health Coverage, Living Allowance, Relocation Allowance, and Training.

United Way offers ongoing technical training and support will be provided in-house, mainly by the Chief Impact Officer, the Director of Community Impact, and the Director of Development. The VISTA will also be directed and encouraged to seek out additional opportunities for professional development to enhance their role, including capacity-building training and webinars offered by organizations like One, The Center for Nonprofit Management, Feed America, and Share Our Strength.
