United Way of Westchester and Putnam Shreds 150 Boxes of Documents During Shred Day

On Friday, June 5, United Way of Westchester and Putnam hosted its annual Shred Day event at its office at 336 Central Park Avenue in White Plains. The event drew individuals and organizations from across Westchester and Putnam Counties, who brought nonessential documents for secure and responsible shredding.

In total, 150 boxes of material were shredded, helping participants safely dispose of sensitive documents and reduce clutter. Since our first Shred-It event in 2021, we have safely and securely recycled 1,500 bankers-boxes of paper weighing 24 tons. That translates to saving 575 trees, 50 barrels of oil (enough to run the average car for 31,500 miles), 48,000 kilowatts of energy (enough to power the average home for almost 6 years), 63 cubic yards of landfill space, and 705 pounds of pollution.

Shred Day is a simple but meaningful way for us to serve the nonprofit and broader community. Many smaller organizations struggle with the high expense of shredding (as much as $1/pound) and consequently, they often store these items, creating clutter and reducing valuable space needed for community services. The United Way was happy to help its nonprofit partners and we are grateful to everyone who came out and did their part to help keep our environment a little bit cleaner.
