United Way Teaches Robotics to Elementary Students at Ossining Summer Program

The United Way of Westchester and Putnam announces the completion of its first Education United summer STEM program, aimed at nurturing young minds through engaging robotics education. This innovative initiative made possible through funding from the Westchester County Youth Bureau’s Invest in Kids program, brought the exciting world of STEM education to students entering third to fifth grade from the Ossining School District’s summer program.

The Education United program, a brainchild of United Way of Westchester and Putnam, is a testament to the power of collaboration and the commitment to empowering our community’s youth. The program’s core objective is to bridge educational gaps and inspire a lifelong passion for learning in young learners, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Thanks to the Westchester County Youth Bureau‘s Invest in Kids program’s generous support, Education United provided essential resources, equipment, and skilled instructors to introduce the students to the captivating world of robotics. This collaboration underscores the importance of investing in STEM education, especially in underserved communities, to prepare future generations for the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly evolving world.

One of the unique features of the Education United program is its commitment to inclusivity and cultural diversity. Recognizing the rich linguistic tapestry of our community, United Way conducted the classes in both English and Spanish, ensuring that every student had the chance to engage and excel in the program. This bilingual approach not only facilitated learning but also celebrated each student’s unique strengths and backgrounds.

“We are immensely proud of the accomplishments achieved through the Education United program,” remarked Nicole Colon, Director of Educational Programs at United Way of Westchester and Putnam. “This initiative exemplifies our dedication to nurturing the potential of every child, regardless of their background. By providing access to quality STEM education, we are preparing these students for future success and laying the foundation for a stronger, more resilient community.”

Throughout the program, students eagerly dived into hands-on activities, constructing and programming robots, fostering teamwork, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. The program’s interactive and immersive approach ignited a spark of curiosity and innovation, helping young learners to grasp complex concepts in an accessible and enjoyable manner.
