Ruth Taylor Scholarship Opportunities Available

Westchester County graduate students pursuing social work or public health careers are invited to apply for scholarship assistance through the Ruth Taylor Scholarship Fund.

The Ruth Taylor Scholarship supports Westchester County residents pursuing graduate degrees in Social Work or Public Health. The fund was established in tribute to Ruth Taylor upon her retirement as the county’s Commissioner of Public Welfare and in recognition of her nearly four decades of outstanding service. The annual awards, ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, are sponsored by the United Way of Westchester and Putnam, the Westchester County government, and the Urban League of Westchester County.

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Westchester County resident
  2. Full-time graduate student in Social Work or Public Health
  3. Minimum GPA as required by your graduate program
  4. Demonstrated financial need
  5. Strong commitment to public service

Completed applications and supporting documents must be submitted by Monday, June 2, 2025. Applications must include all of the following, or they will not be accepted:

  1. A completed application form (download from uwwp.org/ruthtaylorscholarships)
  2. Personal essay describing your interest in the field, goals, and service plans
  3. Official transcripts
  4. Three letters of recommendation
  5. Proof of Westchester residency
  6. Proof of financial need

Applications are evaluated based on criteria including financial need, public service, and scholastic capacity. Recipients must maintain the minimum cumulative university GPA for the award duration. Awards are issued annually, and students are eligible to apply if they have not previously received the scholarship. A change in major or enrollment status (to part-time) will result in losing the scholarship award.  Applications can be submitted online at www.uwwp.org/ruthtaylorscholarships or submitted via email to Tyler Schultz, Social Worker, at [email protected].
