United Way Receives Barnes & Noble Book Donation

Barnes & Noble City Center donated their inventory of children’s books to United Way of Westchester and Putnam, as they permanently close their location in White Plains. These items are critical to furthering our mission to advance our equitable education efforts in Westchester and Putnam.

Early literacy skills are crucial to the future academic success of our children. Early childhood literacy helps children develop vocabulary, positively affects cognitive development and social skills, and reduces the likelihood of later academic difficulties. Annually, United Way of Westchester and Putnam donates 25,000 books to children and families each year. Through the generous donation from Barnes and Noble, we have an increase in educational materials to use through initiatives such as our annual Summer Backpack Program. This program keeps children engaged during summer vacation by providing books and activities, as well as supplemental food to in-need families of school-aged children on a weekly basis.
