All internships and work study assignments are customized to take advantage of the skills and interests of the intern/work study program participant.  Special projects frequently are available for interns/work study participants.  The descriptions below serve as a starting point for the final job description, which is a joint decision made by the supervisor and the intern/work study participant.

Office Hours: M-F 9:00 -5:00. Number of hours per week depends on student availability and program requirements.

Resource Development Intern

Position Overview:

Intern will work with Resource Development fundraising professionals to help increase needed resources, including cash and in-kind contributions.  This position will offer an opportunity to meet community and business leaders in order to share information about the work of United Way and solicit support for this work. 

The Resource Development Intern will be assigned to lead one or more of the following projects that are critical to the success of United Way’s fundraising efforts:

  • Sponsorship Management– Identify sponsors for a comprehensive list of annual United Way events; Conduct research and create tailored proposals for targeted sponsors that align with each corporation’s philanthropic priorities and target market.
  • Event Management – work with lead staff on the management of one or more annual United Way fundraising events including regional wine and food tastings; an event at the Yonkers Raceway; a thank you day at Rye Playland; a 5k run; a family fun day; and others.
  • Employee Campaign Management – work with lead staff to conduct employee charitable giving campaigns including preparing materials for distribution; attending key employee manager meetings and kick off events; compiling campaign result reports; and data entry.
  • Individual Giving Program – Help manage direct mail program to several thousand current and prospective donors; draft solicitation letters; track response; merge data into marketing materials.

Job Qualifications/Requirements:
•  Must have own reliable transportation, valid DL, and proof of insurance

Operations/Finance Intern

Position Overview:

Intern will work with Operations and Finance professionals to help increase needed staffing resources.  This position will offer an opportunity to work closely with finance, IT and operations professionals to learn about the work of United Way and support those “back office” functions essential to maintaining efficient and effective policies and practices and interact with all areas of the organization.  Work in a team environment and understand the importance of accuracy.  The position will have administrative responsibilities including, but not limited to mailing projects, donor choice coding and data entry, providing back-up reception duties, and staffing special events.

• Attend scheduled meetings and/or training session(s)
• Become knowledgeable about United Way in order to be a champion for the organization in the community
• Become knowledgeable about generally acceptable office procedures, protocols and practices
• Learn and apply good office practices in order to provide excellent service to all customers/donors
• Assist staff with administrative and clerical tasks
• Provide back-up reception duties
• Utilize IT skills: create and/or modify excel or word documents; learn application software
• Assist and perform database clean-up
• Other duties as assigned

Marketing and Communication Interns

Position Overview:

The Marketing department is providing two distinct hands-on internship opportunities to individuals focused on the public relations and account management aspects of the Marketing field.  A third position provides an opportunity to focus on graphic and web design. Interns will be exposed to the day-to-day processing and execution of marketing strategies and collaterals. All interns will have administrative responsibilities including but not limited to mailing projects, editing and proofing.

Marketing Intern

Marketing Intern will work with the Marketing & Communication Department assisting with research and bench marketing activities. Working collaboratively across the organization the intern will be involved with the tracking and production of marketing collaterals. The goal of the internship is to provide a meaningful work experience while granting greater insight on how our United Way explains what we do to our donor audiences.

Social Marketing Intern

Social Marketing Intern will work closely with public relations, assisting with the implementation and execution of marketing communications as well as work collaboratively with our Community Impact department. The Social Marketing Intern will gain insight on how our United Way measures effectiveness, identifies and communicates community issues, and analyzes press trends.  

•  work with/reporters to track down stories   
•  awareness outreach for United Way and 2-1-1 at fairs, festivals, conferences, etc.   
•  work press release and disseminate   
•  Help keep website content updated   
•  Coordination of meeting
•  Track and maintain RSVPs for Marketing related events

Graphics and Marketing Intern

 “Looking for someone who is majoring in web design and graphic design, with strong creative skills, etc”, well organized, preferably with working knowledge of Quark, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and an interest in website design and the blogosphere.

Oral History Recorder

This is an excellent learning and hands-on opportunity from the largest global nonprofit.  The local United Way of Westchester and Putnam is celebrating its 50th anniversary of advancing the common good in the two-county area.  The recorder will be a team member and partner with senior staff in preparing for the jubilee.

The intern will gain practical experience in making appointments with key board members, donors, volunteers, community leaders and stakeholders, in conducting oral histories, in using technical equipment to capture personal memories, accounts and points of view of United Way’s mission spanning the organization’s fifty-year history, and in editing and storing interviews for various communications and marketing needs.

Basic computer skills, oral and written proficiency, and familiarity with various recording equipment is necessary.  Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements: A college senior or graduate school student interested in history, oral history, communications and marketing, nonprofit management, or health and human services.  Available 15 to 20 hours weekly during regular business hours; some flexibility.  Must be able to commute to potential off-site locations.

Donor/Prospect Researcher

This is an excellent learning and hands-on opportunity from the largest global nonprofit.  The intern will be a team member and partner in resource development and the grant-making arm for the local United Way of Westchester and Putnam.

The work entails researching current individual donors and prospects plus foundations to better position the organization to develop and strengthen client relationships for the annual fund as well as potential capital and endowment campaigns.  The prospect researcher will help to prioritize a list of potential major asks, aligning prospect interests with the work of United Way’s initiatives.  He/she will also write donor-prospect profiles for hard-copy and database files and for presentation to senior staff.

As time permits, he/she will assist in compiling a case statement for the organization.

Excellent computer skills are necessary including use of the internet for client research as well as excellent oral and written skills.  Use of some off-site research venues may be necessary in addition to utilizing research tools other than the internet.  Perform other duties as assigned.
